How It Works

What Happens at a Toastmaster’s Meeting?

Winners of the Humorous Contest 2020

Each Toastmaster meeting follows an agenda that gives as many members as possible the chance to speak, either as a prepared speech or in one of the other set roles. Evaluators are also scheduled to give helpful, constructive feedback on each speech. There is also a session called Table Topics in which remaining members are invited to speak on impromptu unseen topics.

Ohariu Toastmaster meetings typically include four to five prepared speeches.

Meeting Roles

Typical meeting roles are:-

  • Chairperson to chair the meeting.
  • Timer to signal and record times of speeches.
  • Grammarian who sets a word of the day and evaluates use of language.
  • Speakers who deliver a prepared speech of 5-7 minutes.
  • Evaluators who give feedback on speeches.
  • Table Topics Master who chairs Table Topics session.
  • Table Topics Evaluator who gives feedback on all Table Topics speeches.
  • General Evaluator who gives feedback on all roles not already evaluated.

Table Topics

During Table Topics attendees are invited to make a short impromptu speech. This gives everyone who hasn’t already spoken the chance to present something, and this is often the most interesting – and challenging – part of the meeting.
