The Value of Recognition

Toastmasters is big on recognising achievement. When a member completes a Pathways Level, or an entire Pathway, they receive certificates and recognition from Toastmasters International. When a member competes in a speech contest, they receive a certificate for participation as well as a certificate if they gain a placing. A certificate for taking part may seem to be a bit excessive, but the award recognises the extra effort and commitment required to prepare for a contest. It also serves as a reminder that contests are a valuable way to encourage members to focus on their speaking skills and to improve. There is a real sense in which competitors are ‘winners’, for making the most of their Toastmasters opportunities.

At Ohariu, we recognise contributions to a club meeting. Many clubs do that. At Ohariu, we have a ‘Best Contribution to the Meeting’ award, which could be for any aspect of the meeting. This seems open and inclusive, but can also be seen as a little limiting unless it is used creatively. As a result, General Evaluators get a little creative from time to time and make sure that all amazing contributions get the recognition they deserve. The point is to celebrate each other as we learn and grow and find new ways to contribute.

The photo shows a recent club meeting where the General Evaluator decided that he was not prepared to recognise just one person, since there was a lot going on in the meeting. As a result, all four speakers were awarded equally – a very valid response. They all have a and on the trophy!

The way in which a club recognises the achievement of its members is not terribly important. What is important, is that members who show genuine commitment and growth need to know that their peers see their efforts and accomplishments. Toastmasters is built on peer-to-peer support. Recognition is essential.
